In the heat of the desert day, the bodies of the prisoners are swollen by clouds of flies that surround them.
YEHOSHUA
Strange Fruit
RAYA
what are you saying?
YEHOSHUA
This is a song sung by Billie Holiday. It was written following the hanging of blacks on electric poles somewhere in the American South at the beginning of the century, at a time when racism and the separation between blacks and whites still reigned and was not concealed.
RAYA
This is terrible.
Raya is sitting with her sister Eliran in the back seat, hugging her. Yehoshua sits in the driver's seat. He applies the brakes of the car and drives at a slow speed, surveying the many corpses in the field. Beyond the folds of the ground close to the road, dozens more black corpses can be seen lying on the sand.
RAYA (terrified)
what happened here?
In response, Yehoshua checks his rifle, releases the safety and calls Eli and Dinah on the walkie-talkie.
YEHOSHUA
Get your weapons ready, something strange is happening here.
