Journey – Page 40

Just yesterday, the road was packed with convoys of living families, of people who wanted to escape and save their lives.

The convoy is moving and the sky is filled with many thousands of black crows that descend on the still convoy, standing on the corpses of the people, and penetrating through the shattered windows of those who can no longer defend themselves from them.

The two vehicles slowly level their way in order to get back on the road, looking for an opening between the stationary cars. Hundreds of crows surround them and the passengers in both vehicles rush to close the windows in horror at the unnatural spectacle. The crows are eerily quiet. Many of them stand and look at the strange little convoy making its way among all the dead.

One crow stands on a dead man's face and its beak pecks deep inside the dead man's eye socket. While doing his business, the crow glances at Eli and his wife in the Toyota pickup and for a moment it seemed to Eli that he was winking at him. Dina looked away with a cry of disgust and panic from the repulsive  bird and the horrifying spectacle, but Eli cursed the crow in Spanish with terrible curses. Since taking up his post as a Cuban officer, Eli often returned to speaking Spanish, even unconsciously. His anger at the crow was so great that he opens the car window, pulls out one of his pistols, points it at the crow for a long time, when the crow  opens his beak at him, calling at him with a deafening noise. A shot rings out and the crow drops to the side of the corpse it ate from.

In that moment, a great riot ensues. The thousands of crows who were busy with their morning meal, fly into the sky with a noisy flap of wings and loud screeches, mourning their dead friend. Eli immediately closes the window of the pickup.
