Journey – Page 70

His blood freezes in his veins, but after a second of stabbing fear he comes to his senses, pulls out his gun and sneaks into the parking lot. The sound of gunshots turns from muffled to sharp and stabbing and beating in his ears.

He sees about five Arab soldiers in unidentified uniforms encircling the corner of the parking lot where his friends are hidden. The jeep that the soldiers brought with them is standing about fifty meters from them, its engine is still running and its driver's door is open. It seemed that Eli's ammunition had almost run out, because most of the shots at the moment were coming from the soldiers. Only when they try to get closer were a single bullet or two fired at them and stop them from advancing.

The soldiers looks amused and it was obvious that they think that their prey is in their hands and that soon the time of their compensation would come, when they could murder the man and rape and abuse the women of the small and frightened group. The soldiers had already realized that the ammunition of the man who was still fighting them had run out and therefore they come out from behind a hiding place without fear and walk toward him, about five gunmen walking towards the place of the duel. Yehoshua sneaks towards the abandoned military jeep. None of the soldiers turned back. None of his friends see him either because they are hiding behind the pillars of the hall, at the end of it, in a “dead zone” for him. He sits in the driver's seat, gently closes the jeep door, takes a deep breath while his eyes fill with blood, and presses with all his might on the gas pedal.

The soldiers in their uniforms only later hear the growl of the angry jeep engine when it is already on its way to them, because the echoes of their gunshots deafen their ears in the closed place.
