Journey – Page 53

YEHOSHUA

Where are you from?

RAYA

We live in Kfar Yona. Masses of Arab rioters penetrated the settlement and "captured" us. Our father has been in the army for three weeks and in the last week we haven't heard from him at all. Mother works as a nurse at Laniado Hospital in Netanya. We stayed at home and now we don't know at all what happened to them. All morning we heard explosions and shelling from the direction of Netanya.

Raya bursts into tears and Yehoshua places a fatherly hand on her shoulder.

RAYA

Many of the women of the settlement were raped and murdered before our eyes, but we were probably very lucky. We were caught by an Arab who wanted to "sell us". Apparently he had already raped beforehand and now he was free for business. On the way he and his son managed to kill two other Arab soldiers to prevent them from raping us. They were protecting their 'goods'.

YEHOSHUA

You are very lucky.

Eli to his right is struggling to open two cans for dinner. It is already getting completely dark and Yehoshua opens the doors so that the faint light of the car lights illuminates the darkness around them a little.
