Lara – Page 67

THE YOUNG PRIEST

You may disembark now. Our balloon won't go anywhere.

As Lara and Tom step out of the basket and stretch their limbs, a faint noise emanates from the direction of the house, causing Tom and Lara to freeze in fear. On the other hand, the young priest shows no hesitation. He retrieves a sharp dagger from his jumpsuit and silently walks along the wall on his moccasins, stealthily infiltrating the darkened house, akin to a tiger pouncing on its prey. A few minutes later, a startled and fearful scream resonates from within, followed by the priest's return to the balcony, dragging a young android wearing an orange jumpsuit who is screaming in a panic. He grips her neck fiercely from behind and drops her on her knees on the floor of the balcony, scattered with stones and dirt, where she collapses at his feet and begins weeping.

THE YOUNG PRIEST (shouting at her)

Who are you? Where do you come from?

THE ANDROID (fearfully)

I used to serve a woman for several years. When she passed away, I came here. It happened around the same time they abandoned this center.

THE YOUNG PRIEST

And what have you been doing here all this time?

THE ANDROID (crying)

I survived by gathering vegetables from the fields, and there's a well nearby.

TOM (speculates)

Did you know the Night Candle? A woman residing in Bethlehem of Galilee?

THE ANDROID

Yes, I was her maid.

TOM (excitedly)

Where is she?

THE ANDROID

She's been dead for a long time, a year and a half ago.

TOM (in astonishment)

Then, were you the one writing the letters on her behalf?

THE ANDROID

One of the screens left intact in this building continued to work, so I kept writing to you.
