Lara – Page 75

Lara freezes in her place and stops ascending towards him.

LARA (broken)

No, Tom. (Silence) What will I do without you?

Tom reaches the edge of a large hole in the net, about a meter in size. Half his body is already outside, with only his hands still holding onto the rope. All he must do is shift his body's weight forward, let go of the net, and he will fall three kilometers to the ground.

TOM

You must come to terms with the fact of my death. I have lived a full life. I thank you for giving me companionship, great happiness, and comfort. And now, I have completed what I wanted to accomplish.

LARA (trying desperately to persuade him)

Tom, you are one of the last humans on Earth.

TOM (Reconciled)

I am not foolish, Lara. I already know that we are an extinct species. I am leaving the stage to you, the androids.

LARA (bursts into tears again)

No, Tom. No.

TOM

 Farewell, Lara. I loved you.

Tom lowers his body weight from the edge of the net and plummets abruptly towards his own demise, enveloped in an eerie silence. Lara remains there, sobbing bitterly, her hands twitchingly gripping the net. She's not strong enough to jump after him.

EXT. AFTERNOON. LANDIMG STRIP
The young priest looks on from above, leaning against the railing. A faint bitter smile appears on his face as Tom throws himself to the ground.

EXT. AFTERNOON. Security Net

Exerting considerable effort, Lara ascends to the edge of the net, where she climbs onto the narrow walkway, safely shielded by a railing to prevent any accidental falls. Amidst overwhelming exhaustion, she ascends the successive ladders, ultimately arriving at the trolley of the Night Candle.
