TOM
And why were you writing letters to me on her behalf?
The Android pauses her weeping for the first time and locks eyes with Tom. It's the first time she realizes who she is conversing with.
ANDROID
You are Tom. You've made it here. (Pause) Despite everything.
TOM
Yes.
The android suddenly drops to Tom's feet, bowing before him.
ANDROID
The Night Candle meant everything to me. When she died, she told me to keep writing to you, so that you would not be saddened by her death. She knew it would affect you badly and wanted to prevent it. I therefore continued the relationship on her behalf.
Tom bows his head sadly. He lightly touches her shoulder.
THE YOUNG PRIEST (harshly)
You should apologize to Tom and ask for his forgiveness. A sincere apology.
ANDROID
I know. I didn't know that things would unfold like this. (Silence, and then she slowly raises her innocent eyes towards Tom.) Over time, I've learned to love you, too. I was so sorry to receive a letter from you telling me that you were going to risk yourself to reach me. (Pause and then a trembling voice) I knew it would be the end of me, or of you. (She lowers her gaze.)
Tom remains silent, standing in the courtyard. As he hears her words, he turns his back to her, tears welling up in his eyes. He takes a few steps away from her. The android remains kneeling, head bowed.
THE YOUNG PRIEST
Although you have violated the orders and continued to live in secrecy, which should result in immediate termination, due to your honesty, I will grant you the privilege of saying your final words.
Tom turns towards the young priest.
TOM (pleading with the young priest)
It's alright, you don't have to kill her for this. I forgive her.
