INT. DAY. DESCENDING INTO THE MINE

The two men and the boy stand next to Tom who is wrapped with a rope around one of the pillars. Then he throws the remaining rope down into the abyss. He ties the second rope to the pillar and then to his waist. Tom's father warmly presses his hand.

CLAUDINE'S FATHER

Will you manage on your own?

TOM

Yes, yes.

Tom takes from Claudine’s younger brother’s hand the torch they made for him. He dangles from the rope, his feet fold the rope between his sandals, stopping his descent. At first, Tom was seen in the long dark shaft as the torch illuminated his surroundings, but then afterward, only the dark tunnel remains, and the light of the torch no longer Shines above.

INT. DAY. INSIDE THE DAK MINE

Tom finds himself on a step and stands on it. He discovers that he is at the entrance of a hall carved into the rock. He releases the rope slightly and enters with the torch. Dust clouds rise from his dusty sandals. Tom loosens the ropes from his waist and walks into the vast space, his torch battling the darkness. He passes excavation tools from a rusty wheelbarrow or two, and a filthy black container to collect the quarried soil. Suddenly, he notices in one corner of the hall two chests. With his knife, he opens the lid of the larger one, and in front of his eyes is revealed, through the yellow-orange light of the torch, a box, and inside it, two rifles and beneath them many packages of ammunition. Tom quietly whistles to himself, a surprised whistle. In the smaller box, he discovers sticks of dynamite. Tom moves away in panic from the box of explosives.

He ties the two rifles together with a rope, removes an empty basket from his back, and places several packages of ammunition Int. He wraps the basket around one of the rifles. Then he turns to the edge of the step, ties himself again around the second rope, and begins to climb up with great physical effort. His torch is already weakened and almost extinguished, so he leaves it on the ground at the bottom of the mine.

INT. DAY. AT THE ENTERANCE TO THE PIT

CLAUDINE'S FATHER (smiling)

How was it down there?

Tom, exhausted and panting, covered in sweat, struggles to speak. Powerless, he signals Claudine's father to pull the rope upward. As the delivery arrives, cries of admiration and joy can be heard from the men and boy.

CLAUDINE'S FATHER (with a happy expression on his face)

We have guns! We can feel safe!
