Lara – Page 40

LARA

I find it hard to believe. It doesn't make sense. After all, we humans are so concerned about our well-being: food, water, social interaction, and living in a pollution-free environment.

An uncomfortable silence lingers between Tom and his two companions until Leroy breaks it.

LEROY

I think I saw a well in front of the house. It wouldn't hurt to refill our water containers.

TOM (erupting suddenly with determination)

When the sun sets, please help me bury my parents.

Lara and Leroy's eyes glisten with silent affirmation, showing their respect for his wishes.

EXT. EARLY MORNING. ALONG THE TRACKS

Leroy operates the trolley alone, while Lara sits at the edge with her legs dangling over the platform. Tom sits at the back of the trolley, fully aware that he will never return to this place. He takes a final glance at the burnt farmhouse before it disappears behind the shadow of the mountain. The last image imprinted in his mind is that of three fresh graves on the hilltop.

FLASH BACK

The flying supply trolley descends onto the surface as usual. A group of androids, including Barbara, await the completion of the landing to load the supplies and tools onto the trolley. Unbeknownst to them, beneath the landing strip, young Tom hangs on to his hands, suspended "between Heaven and Earth." Tom constantly looks upward, keeping an eye on the androids' sandals above him. He knows that if they glance below, they might spot him. As the androids enter the trolley to equip themselves, Tom's moment arrives. He climbs back onto the platform behind the trolley and deftly maneuvers over it. There, he squeezes himself between six "hedgehogs," which partially conceal his body. The androids start to disembark from the supply trolley, engaging in conversation and laughter. Some remain silent. Gradually, they disperse, each heading toward their respective trolleys. The elderly village head stands on one of the balconies overlooking the village. His gaze fixes upon Tom, who lies on the trolley door wearing a jumpsuit, eliciting a bitter smile. The flying trolley emits exhaling sounds through its air vents as most of the androids are already boarding their trolleys. Barbara enters the trolley and, to her amazement, realizes that Tom is not on the roof. Surprised, she searches for him but fails to find him, while the trolley has already departed from the village, soaring "between Heaven and Earth."
