MARY ANN (in the afterglow, through the television)
Tom, you make me so happy. After my husband's death, I never thought I'd have the chance to enjoy myself like this. (Silence, as she stretches her fingers and looks at her nails) In two days, I'll finish my mourning period, and I can finally return to my blue jumpsuit. (She sighs)
Tom leans over, kisses her forehead, and sits up on the bed.
Barbara grimaces in front of the picture with her gloomy expression. Reluctantly, she shuts off the TV screen and rises from the small table. Moments later, the door opens quietly and Tom slips back into the room. He pauses at the entrance, listening to Barbara's soft snoring and heavy breathing. With light steps, he quietly climbs onto the bed beside her, lying down with his back turned and his eyes still open.
EXT. LATE MORNING. SETTLEMENT'S PLATFORM
The flying trolley lands with a gentle thud. The door opens, and Tom exits the trolley. Adorning his blue jumpsuit are two modest medals, one silver and one bronze. Only the elderly village head and Barbara, his personal maid, await him. He smiles at them awkwardly, puzzled by the absence of the community's welcome.
TOM (cheerfully)
Where is everyone? (disbelieving) I brought honor to our settlement. I came in second place among all the settlers in the region.
VILLAGE HEAD
We're sorry, Tom. Today is a day of mourning for all of us. A shadow falls over young Tom's face.
Tom's expression turns gloomy.
TOM
What happened?
VILLAGE HEAD
During the night while you were away, Mary Anne took her own life. I believe her heart couldn't bear the weight of her deceased husband's departure, and her solitary life became too difficult for her.
