Lara – Page 19

INT. NIGHT. HOSPITAL ROOM

Lara, a young and beautiful sixteen-year-old girl, wakes up in the hospital, displaying signs of paleness and exhaustion due to her illness. Standing beside her, her mother exudes happiness at her awakening. The treating professor enters the room, wearing a smile on his face as he approaches Lara. Weakened and disoriented, Lara gradually opens her eyes after recovering from her faint. A bright light momentarily blinds her, prompting her to request a reduction in the intensity. Her mother steps towards the corner of the room and partially dims the light.

PROFESSOR

Your life has been saved! You were on the verge of death!

Exhaustedly, Lara shakes her head and lets out a sarcastic sigh.

LARA

I can feel it, doctor. I am still in pain.

Professor

I am a professor, not a doctor. I spoke while you were sleeping with your mother, and I also want to talk with you.

LARA (SKEPTICAL)

Yes?

PROFESSOR

We managed to save you from a severe stomach infection. You will live a long life, but I regret to inform you that you will never be able to conceive children. Your fallopian tubes have been irreversibly damaged.

Lara casts her gaze downward, lowering her eyes. The professor remains silent, closing his mouth for several seconds.

PROFESSOR (IN A HUSHED TONE)

During the period when you were teetering between life and death, I had a conversation with your mother. She shared a great deal about you. You are truly a unique individual. (Pause) Today, we have a captivating research program that we hope will capture your interest.

Lara sits on the couch. However, her ears remain unresponsive. She grapples with the devastating reality of never being able to conceive. Tears fill her mother's eyes as she gazes upon her despondent daughter.

PROFESSOR (empathetically)

I will leave you alone now. It appears that you should prioritize resting for now.
