Prophet – Page 56

The prophet moves slightly away from the crowd and the lifeguard station, sweat dripping from his face under the scorching sun. Two policemen wade through the deep sand, following a short, stout, bald, and sweaty court clerk dressed in a black lawyer's robe who seems to be struggling with the intense heat. As Yoram distances himself from the crowd and walks away, the court clerk calls after him.

COURT CLERK (calling towards the Prophet)

Sir! Sir!

The prophet turns in wonder towards the clerk and the two policemen.

THE PROPHET

Yes?

COURT CLERK (somewhat embarrassed)

I was sent here by court order. The Minister of Health signed a warrant this morning to admit you to a closed institution to evaluate…. (swallows his saliva) your sanity.

The prophet remains silent, shaking his head. The clerk and the policemen think that he is mulling over what to do, but the prophet has no intention of arguing. In the end, he raises his eyes and pins them on the court clerk.
