Prophet – Page 39

In recent years, we have endured severe economic hardships. Our textile factory, like many others, closed due to ongoing losses. The software house, situated far from the center, couldn't sustain us. Talking about agriculture in recent years would only reveal the struggles we faced. Our repeated pleas for help from the government, Jewish Agency, and Kibbutz Movement were met with rejection. The banks showed total refusal, cynicism, and arbitrariness when we asked them to ease our debt burden.

INT. DAY. RESIDENCE OF ONE OF THE MEMBERS

The home TV camera captures the quietness of the abandoned homes. The image quality is poor, grainy, and black and white. The last cups of coffee rest on the table, a discarded Barbie doll lies on the living room couch, and a book by Amos Oz rests on a dresser next to one of the beds. The camera then shifts to the small and modest kitchen. A forgotten transistor radio continues to play a tune, as if unaware of recent events. Through the window, children's bikes are scattered in the yard. The house next door, once occupied by fellow kibbutz members, is also deserted.

HANAN (VOICE OVER, with a broken voice)

We've been dedicated to serving our country since the day we were born. The kibbutz has known sorrow and loss through the graves of our comrades who fell in Israel's wars. A few weeks ago, we came to the difficult realization that our kibbutz could no longer continue in its current state. Days ago, we decided to leave the country, taking our families with us, and seek a new path for our kibbutz elsewhere.
