Prophet – Page 57

THE PROPHET

Do what you need to do.

The court clerk leans on one of the policemen, takes off his shoe, and empties it of sand. A small hole is revealed in his sock. The second policeman signals to Yoram to extend his hands. The prophet complies as the policeman handcuffs him.

POLICEMAN (whispers)

I'm sorry, Sir, the explicit instructions I received were to handcuff you, even though you pose no danger to the public and have no intention of escaping.

THE COURT CLERK (comforting the prophet)

It's just for the sake of inspection. They'll release you in a few days.

A few people around them who witness the scene start to gather, but they are few. Cries begin to be heard from the murmuring crowd. From a distance, more people start to rush back quickly, closing in on the prophet, the court clerk, and the policemen.

BYSTANDER

Shame on you!
